A New Year's custom in Japan is creating rice cakes, or mochi, which is boiled sticky rice, mashed to form a white dumpling.

Mochi is made into a New Year's decoration called kagami mochi. This is made by placing two round mochi cakes on top of one another and topping with a bitter orange, daidai. The name daidai is supposed to be auspicious since it means "several generations."

I remember seeing these in Japan! I think my host mom had some...plastic-ish one, lol. This is much better!

haha! That was my inspiration! I saw the plastic ones in Japan and thought a soft version would be sweeter.
